Lexical representation and modification within the noun phrase

چکیده
Formal semanticists of natural language have traditionally worked with relatively impoverished lexical representations and have generally been conservative in drawing the line between those aspects of interpretation which are determined by lexical information and composition rules, and those which are determined contextually, leaving a substantial amount of work to context. While this strategy is justifiable if one considers the job of the semanticist to account only for what is strictly entailed, it has also in some sense greatly simplified this job, resulting in rather impoverished lexical representations and relegating many problems to the so-called pragmatics wastebasket, if in a relatively orderly fashion. Nonetheless, in this paper I discuss two kinds of problems, both related to modification within the noun phrase, which show why richer lexical representations similar to those proposed in Generative Lexicon theory (Pustejovsky 1995) should be of interest to formal semanticists.

Comparing Lexical Bundles in Hard Science Lectures; A Case of Native and Non-Native University Lecturers
Researchers stated that learning and applying certain set of lexical bundles of native lecturers by non-native lecturers would help students improve their proficiency through incidental vocabulary input. The present study shed light on the lexical bundles in hard science lectures used by Native and Non-native lecturers in international universities with the main purpose of analyzing the structu...
متن کاملQualia Structure And The Compositional Interpretation Of Compounds
The analysis of nominal compound constructions has proven to be a recalcitrant problem for linguistic semantics and poses serious challenges for natural language processing systems. We argue for a compositional treatment of compound constructions which limits the need for listing of compounds in the lexicon. We argue that the development of a practical model of compound interpretation crucially...
متن کاملUsing Conceptual Combination Research to Better Understand Novel Compound Words*
Interpreting a novel modifier-noun phrase (e.g, licorice guitar) involves both the conceptual and lexical systems; one must access the concepts denoted by the words and select a relation (e.g., noun MADE OF modifier) to form a unified conceptual representation. We describe recent empirical work that demonstrates that the ease of interpreting a novel noun phrase is influenced by the availability...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملDeterminers and Number in English contrasted with Japanese, as exemplified in Machine Translation
The fact that concepts are grammaticalized differently in different languages is a major problem for translation, especially for machine translation. Two major examples of this are syntactic number, and the use of (in)definite articles (a, some, the). In languages such as English, nouns are marked for number and the choice of article (or of no article) must be made for every noun phrase. In con...
